Yes, Some Space Gallery is tucked inside a frame shop. But though many frame shops around town like to show art, this place is unusual, as it often shows great art. The still new space might just provide a few of the more established galleries a bit of healthy competition. Not long after the top-notch, custom frame shop Gallery Frames moved to its current location at First and Cherry, longtime employees Daniel Carrillo and Shaun Kardinal started hanging exhibitions on two (yes, just two) of the shop's walls. They cheekily named their "gallery" Some Space, in recognition of how much room they have dedicated to exhibiting art-not a lot, not a little, just some.
But the name also captures the genius of their program, which is emphatically distinct from the sea of larger galleries in the area. Kardinal says they wanted to "create a venue in which talented [oftentimes younger] artists can show their work in the hotbed of Pioneer Square without necessarily being tied to a bigger gallery and without being tied, per se, to those bigger gallery price tags." While you're on First Avenue, you may want to walk to the relatively new Some Space. The crew at Gallery Frames noticed wall space was being wasted and decided to turn it into a gallery of sorts, which is off to a good start. If you'd like to collect savvy art but your means are slender, Some Space is a good place to start.
